The Top Secondary Services to Have as a Roofer

It’s the age-old story. As it gets colder outside, the number of roofing jobs in the queue decreases.

Winter is the roofing slow season, which makes sense—most people will wait until warmer weather for repairs if they can. But what can you do to supplement those jobs in the meantime?

The answer is to expand your services beyond roofing. We’ll cover the most popular (and lucrative) secondary services you can provide to bring in more income year-round.

9 Secondary Services Worth Adding to Your Roofing Business

Offering more services outside of roofing will help sustain your project pipeline. But which secondary services are worth your time?

We found the top nine most popular secondary services by pulling data from our Peak Performance 2023 and 2024 reports—real data from real roofers around the U.S.

Let’s dig in!

Gutters

In 2022, 55% of survey respondents said they offered gutter services. That’s skyrocketed 30% in just a year.

Adding gutters to your list of services makes sense as a roofing company. You’re already on the rooftop, and you can easily replace gutters once you install a new roof.

Siding

Jumping from 42% in 2022 to 63% in 2023, siding is the second-most popular secondary service roofers are offering. Why is this?

Homeowners might be looking for several home renovations at the same time. If you provide roofing and siding services, you could get one client to use both services. Of course, you’ll want to repair or replace the roof before you work on the siding.

Solar

Interest in solar is steadily continuing to grow in the roofing industry. Nearly a quarter of respondents (21% in 2023) said they’re offering solar as part of their services. That’s up from 17% in 2022.

Although California, Texas, Florida, and New York have the most solar installations a year, solar is a viable option for every state.

Snow & Ice Removal

You want to spend less time on the roof as the snow comes down. But you can take advantage of that same snow by offering snow and ice removal services.

Over the last two years, the number of roofers doing snow and ice removal has stayed steady—13% and 12%, respectively.

Put a plow on your work truck, buy snow blowers and shovels, and don’t forget the ice melt!

Holiday Lights

Interestingly, the number of roofers providing holiday lighting has decreased in the last year. In 2022, 9% of respondents did holiday lights, whereas 3% did in 2023.

We’re not sure why that number is dropping, but the fact that fewer roofers offer holiday lights as a service leaves more openings in the market. If you add holiday lights to your service repertoire now, you’ll have less competition than a year ago.

Windows

4.2% of roofers surveyed said they did windows in 2022. That went up to 5.1% in 2023. Installing windows is a simple way to add to your income. Fortunately, you can install windows year-round for a more constant revenue source.

Many roofers also do skylights and doors along with windows.

Remodeling

The number of roofers offering remodeling services more than doubled in 2023—.7% increased to 2%. If you’re looking for another revenue stream, consider offering remodeling services.

Some common remodeling areas for roofers include bathrooms, kitchens, and basements. You can also look at doing garage remodeling or home additions.

Painting

Roofers already have at least one piece of painting equipment: a ladder. You can use your ladder for interior or exterior painting or both, so you can tailor your painting services to your tastes.

About 2% of roofing contractors offered painting services in 2022 and 2023, so there isn’t much competition. If you want to start painting in your company, check out our guide to starting a painting business.

Decks and Patios

Deck and patio work is technically part of remodeling, but this specialized service gets many roofing contractors some extra jobs. Researchers expect outdoor living to become even more popular in the next few years, so it’s good to get into it now.
